How to live everyday like it's your last

Updated: Jan 5

Without burning any bridges, emptying your bank account or calling your boss a.. well… you know.

I have a few issues with the sentiment “live everyday like it’s your last”. Firstly, I’m a believer in the whole manifestation, you attract what you think about, universe thing and fear that if I live everyday like it’s my last it might be, you know, my last. My second issue is that the statement immediately conjures image of first class trips, champagne & lobster lunches, jumping out of planes and walking through remote jungles, something I don’t feel is realistic for everyday use. However, I am a big believer in living a life you truly love and finding joy in the everyday. So, ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, a how to guide on living everyday like it’s your last, real world addition.

1. Truffle oil the crap out of your life.

I put truffle oil on everything and it makes me feel bougie as hell. Truffle to me symbolises luxury and decadence, so when I add a bit of truffle oil to my humble tomato soup it makes me feel special. And glamorous. Like I’m sending a message to the universe that says I am worth it (someone should make that their company slogan). And for only £3 a bottle that lasts MONTHS, why the hell not.

2. Take yourself on a date.

Whether that be a coffee date, a walk to an area you’ve never been, a restaurant you’ve been wanting to try or making an over the top meal for yourself at home. Light some candles, pour yourself a gouty glass of red and find out what your favourite sandwich filling is. If you want to feel like every day is a joy then you’re going to need to fall in love with yourself first, because that B is going to be following you around everywhere. Woo yourself the way you want to be woo-ed.

3. Give your home a signature scent

Never underestimate the power of a good scent. I was gifted a home fragrance from the Langham hotel, the same scent they spray in their hotels and walking around my home spritzing the ginger flower aroma makes me feel ALIVE. Go buy a decadent home scent and for gods sake do not wait for a special occasion to use it, today is the special occasion! Do you not understand what’s happening here?

4. Fresh flowers.

Having fresh flowers in my home makes me feel like Oprah. And when I buy them from an actual flowers market? Ooooh girl you best calm down. They boost my mood, make my home look cared for and, yet again, send a message out to the universe that I am deserving of nice things just because. Channel your inner Oprah and bask in your infinite glory.

5. Treat yo self every. Damn. Day.

It could be taking a long bath, wearing something extravagant, putting on lipstick, wearing a crisp collared shirt (is that the male equivalent to lipstick? I’m trying to be inclusive). Have a peek inside the “special occasion” box in your mind and do one of those things today.

The point is, we often think that living everyday like it’s our last means doing something extreme like quitting your job and climbing Mt Everest. While both are excellent pursuits, you don’t have to go to extremes to make every day a joy to live. Treat yourself the way you would a loved one and you’ll start seeing the beauty in your everyday regular pursuits.
